Adiantums are commonly known as Maiden Hair ferns, a common name that reoccurs for the Ginko tree as the leaves have a similar appearance. Not sure which came first? The fern has worldwide distribution with over 200 species from Australia all the way up through Asia and from North to South America. There are tender, tropical species and tough, hardy zone 3 species. It is also quite adaptable, mutating and hybridizing to fit into unique ecological niches. They are also beautiful garden plants that displays its delicate, etherial foliage all season. Here in northeast US adiantum pedatum is a well known woodland fern of rich hardwood forests. It grows from a thick, creeping rhizome. The pinnate fronds grow along a dark, glossy stalk that curves creating layers of beautifully displayed foliage.
