Bergenia is a unique little woodland plant from Central and Eastern Asia. Sometime called “Pig sqeek”, it flowers early, before the leaves, with panicle-like, bell shaped flowers on a thick red to purple stem. Generally shades of red and pink. The tough leathery leaves follow and persist into winter turning brilliant red. Needs a moist woodland setting to make a real fall show. Plants are slow growing but can make a beautiful ground cover over time. A genus of only six species but dozens of cultivars.
B. cordifolia ‘Winterglow’ - A very nice seed strain from Jelitto. Bright red flowers in early spring. Incomparable fall and winter color.
Sold in 4” pots. Well established.
