The butterfly bush or Summer lilac is a showy, deciduous shrub with panicles of fragrant white, purple or pink flowers in mid to late Summer. Very attractive to butterflies. Though considered marginal here, our seed grown plants do well with a bit of mulch at the base. Needs a sunny location and well drained soil. It dies back to the ground each winter, but increases every year. The binomial name for this plant honors a French missionary to China, Armand David, an early European to identify this Chinese native. Many of the binomial names for plants have a very Euro-centric bias.
