Cypripediums (Orchidaceae)

from $45.00

Cypripedium is a genus of hardy, terrestrial orchids comprising 58 species with world wide distribution. In the Eastern US there are about four species and maybe four others, including some natural hybrids in the rest of North America. In New England there are three well known species. C. Parviflora, the yellow flowering form; C. Parviflora ‘Makasin’, with slightly smaller flowers and striking, dark lateral petals; and the famous C. Reginae, or showy Ladyslipper, with a pink labellum and white petals. There is also a pure white form. The last species from the Eastern US is C. Kentuckiense, the Southern Lady Slipper, one of the most striking and largest flowers. It has a white pouch and long dark purple lateral petals that twist down the length. We have been propagating orchids for about four years now. Though they can be difficult to get going and there is often loss, once they are planted they take well to average garden conditions. A good site is rich and well drained with morning sun. We purchase certified, lab grown starts and grow them out for 3-4 years. We are offering all four species, shipped bare root and ready to plant. We will send along careful instructions. They are sold with either one or two shoots and most are ready to flower.
