This upright shrub, also known as February daphne, is an upright shrub native to Europe, Siberia and the Caucuses. It has naturalized here in Vermont to the chagrin of many. It flowers early before the leaves with small aromatic flowers along the stem. This is usually in April here in Vermont. After it leafs out the flowers form small berries that turn red in late summer. They are often carried around by birds that spread them around. They have seem to settled here without much fuss, usually a few here and there greeting you on an early spring walk from along a stone wall.
