Hellebores (Ranunculus)

from $18.00

Another legendary genus of plants from Europe and the Caucus’. Hellebores famously can push through the snow of early spring to produce tough, multi-colored flowers before the new foliage appears giving rise to the name Lenten rose. Thrives in deep, rich soil and afternoon shade or a dappled woodland environment.  A multi species plant that hybridizes easily, there are many cultivars and mixes out there. We have been gathering volunteer seedlings from Cady’s Falls Nursery that flower in a range of white, pink, and maroon over a long period in early spring. The tough, lobed leaves that come later producing attractive clumps that persist long into the fall. One of the four classical poisons. The name probably comes from the Greek bora meaning food and "helein’ meaning ‘to injure’. A very long lived and well behaved addition to the perennial garden. One of the first flowers in the spring. With modern breeding they come in nearly every color with both single and double forms. As most of our plants are from seedlings, we cannot gaurantee colors for shipping this year. Best to visit the nursery in May and see what’s blooming! We look forward to providing specific collections and colors in the future.
