Meconopsis (Papavaraceae)

$18.00

The infamous Himalayan blue poppy. Native to the high sunny mountains of western China and Tibet it grows in difficult to replicate conditions. In fact, it is not recommended to even try growing them if you live too far south of the 43rd parallel. They thrive in a cool maritime climate most famously in Scotland and northern Quebec. We have started propagating this plant (which had a learning curve!) from Jelitto seed M. x sheldonii ‘Lingholm’ (Blue Fertile Group). They are a classic poppy with hairy leaves growing from a crown. In early summer it flowers in a blue that no one can deny. They need rich, calcium soil and bright cool shade. Many have tried and many have failed. The right geographical location is a good start. We planted our first ones in our cool, northeast facing gardens this past summer. We have a good potential location. I’m hopeful!

Sold in deep 3” pots. Vernalized and well started.
