Peony (Paeoniaceae)

from $25.00

One of the most beloved genus of the northern perennial garden. Peonies have native species from Europe to East Asia and Western N. America. There are maybe only 30 species but the ease of hybridizing has led to a dizzying amount of breeding. The Chinese have been breeding them for over 2000 years for beauty and medicine. In general there are two forms, a herbaceous form and a deciduous, shrubby form. There are also the Itoh peonies, or cross sectional peonies, but that’s another story. There are many herbaceous types and most people are familiar with the large, double flowers overflowing with petals. These are generally sterile hybrids.  We have chosen to focus on the ‘species peonies’. These are generally the wild forms or selections of and produce a fertile flower. They are also known as woodland peonies that grow best in dappled shade. They flower earlier than the doubles and are sturdier plants that won't flop over at the first rain. They also bear an ornamental seed pod in the fall (unlike the sterile doubles) and it is with these that we have built our collection. We started collecting seeds from Cady’s Falls Gardens in 2019.
