Platycodon Grandiflorum (Campanulaceae)
Balloon flower is an Asian native and is a genus containing just this one species. It has held an important place in Chinese medicinal pharmacology. A hardy plant that thrives in well drained, sandy soil and bears blue, white or pink flowers from June to August on 30-36 in. tall plants. Makes a nice cut flower. The buds look like an inflated balloon before the flower opens. It tends to come up late in the spring and works well with spring bulbs. There are also several double forms.
