A massive genus of more than 450 species not including crosses and cultivars. Entire nurseries are dedicated to this enticing genus. They make up some of the best rock garden and trough plants. Most are mat or cushion forming, evergreen to deciduous perennials made of tiny rosettes from the cool mountains of the northern hemisphere where they cling to life on high rocky mountains. The flowers and forms of flowers are variable but the classic is a tight bun covered with tiny, stemless, or short stemmed flowers. Often increasing by side shoots like the sempervivums. We have dipped our toe into this imposing genus with one cultivar S. x arendsii ‘Snow Carpet’. A fairly easy “mossy” form with a less dense form.
Sold in 3” pots. Vernalized and well established.
