Stachys (Lamiaceae)

$12.00

The stachys genus has a few well known garden plants, including the old stalwart, Lamb’s Ears, Stachys byzantina. We offer wood betony, species officinalis, an old European plant with a long history. It grows from a rugged crown of dark green, narrowly oval leaves and puts up a stalk with interrupted, purple flowers. It can flower all Summer if spent blooms are picked. It prefers dry conditions, full sun, and is susceptible to crown rot if Winter conditions are too wet. Believed to ward off evil spirits and nocturnal goblins or nightmares in old Europe. Today it used to treat anxiety, migraines, high blood pressure and other neuralgia complaints. A nice compact, clumping perennial that grows slowly and doesn’t seem to seed around. Nice!

We also have S. marcantha, a larger flowering species from the Caucuses.
