Uniola, also known as Sea Oats, is a sub-tropical grass that grows in the sand dunes of the southeastern US, and parts of Mexico and the Caribbean. It is an important plant that stabilizes these coastal ecosystems. Despite this, it is hardy up into our zone 4 climate given good drainage and a sunny spot. The golden colored, panicles, made up of flat spikelets vaguely resemble rolled oats, hence the common name. It make a nice addition to dried arrangements or can persist for winter interest. A nice native grass that food and habitat to native insects.
